What is AI?

Artificial Intelligence is a method of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently like the human mind. AI is accomplished by studying the patterns of the human brain and by analyzing the cognitive process. The outcome of these studies develops intelligent software and systems. Researchers extend the goals of AI to the following:

Logical Reasoning

AI programs enable computers to perform sophisticated tasks. On February 10, 1996, IBM’s Deep Blue computer won a game of chess against a former world champion, Garry Kasparov.

Knowledge Representation

Smalltalk is an object-oriented, dynamically typed, reflective programming language that was created to underpin the “new world” of computing exemplified by “human-computer symbiosis.”

Planning and Navigation

The process of enabling a computer to get from point A to point B. A prime example of this is Google’s self-driving Toyota Prius

Natural Language Processing

Set up computers that can understand and process language.

Perception

Use computers to interact with the world through sight, hearing, touch, and smell.

Emergent Intelligence

Intelligence that is not explicitly programmed, but emerges from the rest of the specific AI features. The vision for this goal is to have machines exhibit emotional intelligence and moral reasoning.

Some of the tasks performed by AI-enabled devices include:

  • Speech recognition
  • Object detection
  • Solve problems and learn from the given data
  • Plan an approach for future tests to be done

What is ML?

Machine learning is a segment of artificial intelligence. It is designed to make computers learn by themselves and perform operations without human intervention, when they are exposed to new data. It means a computer or a system designed with machine learning will identify, analyse and change accordingly and give the expected output when it comes across a new pattern of data, without any need of humans.

The power behind machine learning’s self-identification and analysis of new patterns, lies in the complex and powerful ‘pattern recognition’ algorithms that guide them in where to look for what. Thus, the demand for machine learning programmers who have extensive knowledge on working with complex mathematical calculations and applying them to big data and AI is growing year after year.

Machine learning, though a buzz word only since recent times, has conceptually been in existence since World War II when Alan Turing’s Bombe, an enigma deciphering machine was introduced to the world. However, it’s only in the past decade or so that there has been such great progress made in context to machine learning and its uses, driven mainly by our quest for making this world more futuristic with lesser human intervention and more precision. Pharma, education technology, industries, science and space, digital inventions, maps and navigation, robotics — you name the domain and you will have instances of machine learning innovations made in it.

Companies that got success using AI/ ML!!

1. SPOTIFY

Spotify offers a great personalized weekly playlist called “Discover Weekly”, one of its flagship features. Every Monday, each user receives a latest playlist of new recommended songs, made to their personalized choice based on their listening history and the songs they are interested in.

Spotify deploys a blend of various data aggregation and sorting processes in order to design their specific and powerful recommendation model that is powered by machine learning.

“One of our flagship features is called Discover Weekly. Every Monday, we give you a list of 50 tracks that you haven’t heard before that we think you’re going to like. The ML engine that’s the main basis of it, and it’s advanced some since, had actually been around at Spotify a bit before Discover Weekly was there, just powering our Discover page” — David Murgatroyd, Machine Learning Leader at Spotify.

2. BYJU’S

Inculcating Artificial Intelligence

The company has recently taken an early initiative in this direction by acquiring a firm that brings them a small team that specializes in this. Back in 2019, Think and Learn acquired a Palo Alto-based company — Osmo, that developed educational games for young kids. The $120 million acquisition deal fetched Byju’s a whole group of experts in artificial intelligence and machine learning, under the leadership of Osmo’s co-founder Pramod Sharma.

This initiative promises a hopeful AI future for the BYJU’s where the firm can even experiment with Augmented Reality as well as Virtual Reality to observe how these technologies can be inculcated onto the BYJU’S app for making learning more useful for the end result student.

BYJU’S use of technology

Leveraging Deep Knowledge Graphs to develop personalized learning

As per an interview with Byju Raveendran conducted by Forbes India, he emphasized that the heart of the BYJU’S personalization engine would be its extensive learning profile. This is made possible through deep Knowledge Graphs of over one lakh concepts and relationships which have been developed to create personal learning journeys through elements like videos, questions, adaptive flows, quizzes, flashcards, and so forth.

In addition to this, the learning content also depends on various other parameters. For instance, whenever a student embarks on their learning journey, an extensive learning profile is created for every student to help customize their whole experience. This enables Byju’s to personalize the learning experience on the basis of the strengths and weaknesses of the student, the student’s pace, and his/her needs.

Employing Data Analytics

The content creation process in Byju’s is highly based on the data analytics at work since a lot of data and insights are generated in house. For instance, If a sizable section of students is committing errors in a specific concept, Byju’s can go back and affix easier videos, additional content formats, and simpler questions to enable the system to develop a smoother learning curve. The students end up grasping the difficult areas of the concept but they absorb it slowly and without getting discouraged.

3. SAMSUNG

Samsung’s AI robot

Another innovation out of Samsung Electronics is Saram, Korean four human, a humanoid robot now out of development that’s packed with AI. So far, Samsung has used the technology in its own factory with an AI robot arm, but experts expect to see the company commercialise its robots, although that hasn’t happened yet. Sources confirm that Samsung has completed vertical walking robot technology which would allow Saram to be stable and walk across a variety of surfaces. Investments in other robot companies and the fact that robotics has been a long-term research project four Samsung seem to point to Samsung introducing its own commercial robot in the very near future.

With its reputation and success with Android, appliances and home electronics and its earlier lessons with AI and a resolute strategy toward AI growth and excellence, the future looks promising four Samsung to close the gap between itself and competitors in the race to be prepared four the 4th industrial revolution and innovations from big data, artificial intelligence and robotics.

AI technology based on machine learning to upscale images

Samsung Electronics was the first to unveil 8K AI tech four television. The technology can analyse content and can automatically upscale low-resolution images to 8K picture quality. This innovation solves the current problem with the availability of high-resolution content to use on super-high resolutions screens. Now, all pictures can be transformed to 8K, which is currently the highest resolution capable in digital television.
